Lamar River

...a variety of caddis in July. The hopper fishing is excellent from late July through late September. In mid-September, the Lamar also produces heavy hatches of Gray and Green Drake mayflies. These are big bugs, size 10 and 12, and these bring up all the big fish. If you hit the right day (heavy cloud cover is ideal), you will see some of the best dry fly fishing of the whole season.

Fishing the Lamar River

Soda Butte Creek is a Lamar tributary that offers very similar fishing on its lower reaches. Just north of Soda Butte itself, there is a good trailhead, giving access to the upper portion of the Lamar. A 2 to 5 mile hike puts you into water that few people fish. The cutthroats are smaller here, but plentiful and easy to catch.
