The good news about December is we have had a lot of early snow storms, which have given the mountains a great start for snow pack. The Upper Yellowstone Basin is currently sitting around 105% snow pack, the Jefferson Basin is sitting at 117% and the Madison Basin is looking great with 137%. Big Sky and Bridger have had great season openers with plenty of coverage and powder days already, reminiscent of the weather patterns we used to see in the 90’s.
With more snow in the forecast for next week and temperatures below zero, the fishing outlook does not look too promising. If you do decide to get out there, the Paradise Valley Spring Creeks would likely be your best option for actively feeding fish. Although there is no slush ice on the Yellowstone currently, the warmer water on the Spring Creeks are the best option. Ice fishing has been another popular option. Dress appropriately as you don’t want any exposed areas which could lead to frostbite.
