The Hardy Ultralite is our new favorite all-around 4-weight, edging out the Douglas 8’6”#4 SKY G and Hardy’s previous winner the 8’6”#4 Zephrus. The new Ultralite is slightly stiffer than the Zephrus, allowing it to maintain more stable loops at mid distances, while still providing unmatched feel and supreme accuracy in close. Although the Douglas Sky G 8’6”#4 had a lighter swing weight than the Hardy Ultralight, we felt the Ultralite was more accurate and smoother, which ultimately lead us to our conclusion that this is the best 4-weight money can buy.
The all-new Ultralite range of fly rods features Sintrix NSX, Sintrix NSX is based on our industry-changing Sintrix technology but now combined with a secondary classified additive that allows much lower weights to be achieved. This lighter weight material allows targeted modification of the blank design without affecting the strength of the blank. The net result is lighter, more responsive blanks that allow the angler to “feel ” the line more during the casting stroke giving a greater degree of control than ever before. The reel seat on the Ultralite is a masterpiece of form and function – moving more of the rods weight behind the hand gives incredible in-hand balance, single start threads resist the reel loosening under heavy use and a keyed body further ensure a snug fit for your reel.
